Senza cercarlo mi capita in mano l’ultimo libro di Amélie Nothomb; ne avevo letto qualche pagina un po’ di tempo fa e poi me ne sono dimenticata, non perchè fosse brutto, ma perchè spesso si lascia da parte certi libri, forse perchè inconsciamente sentiamo che in quel momento non racchiudono le parole giuste che cerchiamo. Però, per fortuna, si ritorna indietro, ci si ricorda di certi libri ed eccoci. Amélie Nothomb, uscita con Una forma di vita.

Poco più di 100 pagine, storie piccole ma profonde, a questo ormai ci ha abituati Amélie Nothomb. Come altri suoi libri, questo prende l’avvio da una vicenda davvero accaduta nella vita dell’autrice: oltre che scrivere molti romanzi, Amélie tiene molto alla sua corrispondenza, quella di una volta con carta e penna. Passa magari intere giornate tra chili di lettere, prima legge quelle meno importanti, poi per ultime quelle di chi magari da anni intrattiene con lei quella che ormai si può definire un’amicizia.

Tutto parte dall’ennesima lettera che riceve, ma questa volta c’è qualcosa di diverso, è un soldato americano, il soldato di seconda classe Melvin Mapple, a essere dall’altra parte. Scrive da Bagdad che ha bisogno d’aiuto e dopo aver letto i libri di Amélie sente che con lei può parlare, che lei lo può capire.

Un botta e risposta che continua, prima con scetticismo della scrittrice, poi con più convinzione.

Il soldato Mapple, in più, è un soldato diverso, nelle lettere racconta come dall’essere un vagabondo si ritrova nell’esercito e obeso. A quanto racconta non è l’unico, assieme a lui altri soldati si danno al cibo come mezzo di protesta contro la guerra.

Ovviamente, come ogni libro di Amélie Nothomb che si rispetti, c’è il colpo di scena, quello in cui non vogliamo credere e che stravolge tutto quello che è venuto prima, ma in fondo ce lo aspettiamo, è quello che adoro dei suoi libri: crudi, veri, reali e imprevedibili.

Without looking for it, I found the latest book of Amélie Nothomb; I read some pages a while ago and then i forgot about it, not because it was bad, but because we often leave some books behind, maybe because subconsciously we feel that they don’t hold the right words we’re looking for in that precise moment. However, thankfully, we end going back, we remember of some books and here we go. Amélie Nothomb, Une forme de vie.

Little more than 100 pages, short but meaningful stories, that’s what we’re used to when talking of Amélie Nothomb. As some other of her books, this one begins from a real event in her life: while she writes many novels, Amèlie really cares about her correspondency, the one of yore, with pen and paper. She can spend whole days among mountains of mails, first reading the less important, and then those from who’s been keeping with her what we can call a friendship.

It all begins from on of those letters, but this time it’s slightly different, it’s an american soldier, Private Melvin Mapple, on the other side. He’s writing from Baghdad that he needs help and after reading her books he feels he can speak with her, because she can understand him.

It’s a crosstalk going on, at first with skepticism from her, then with more enthusiasm. Furthermore, Private Mapple is a different kind of soldier, in his letters he tells how he finds himself from being a homeless to be in the army and obese. Listening to him, he’s not the only one, like him other soldiers give in to the food as a means of protest against the war.

Of course as any other Amélie Nothomb’s worthy books there’s a twist, the one we don’t want to believe and that turns upside down everything that came first, but in the end we expected it from her. That’s what love of her books: they’re crude, real and unpredictable.
