Hi Hortense! Forlane 6 is not only where you and your partner Mathieu Goussin realize your works, but also where you live: what is it and why did you make this choice?

 Forlane 6 is the name of our 40 years old sailing boat we live on in the Mediterranean. We are currently based in Crete for the winter. It is from our sailing together that came the idea to work underwater. This is why we named our studio Forlane 6. Living on the boat to find places to work underwater is ideal, it gives us some much possibilities.

What are “submerged art installations” and where did you get the idea?

 The idea came from our discussion regarding all the random things we would see at the bottom of the sea such as plastic bags, old boots or dishes. We talked about what these objects would become and how they would eventually be a part of this underwater environment. At one point we decided to bring these thoughts to life. The Mediterranean is a very clear sea, with stunning rock formations and very little sea life, it was a perfect spot to install these imaginary creatures.

On your site you wrote that your work is inspired by Roman Signer and Susanna Majuri, by sculpture and photography. Why?

 Since the beginning of my studies I have always been mesmerized by the action sculpture concept of Roman Signer. I believe his work can speak to anyone on very different levels. Our work is inspired by his ephemeral works and the use of domestic objects activated by natural elements such as air or water. We also like the absurdity of his pieces that always bring a very humourous touch. The work of Susanna Majuri was a more recent find. We are interested in the fact she stages her work to really create a world of her own using photography.

 How do you use different media?

 Our work is a mix of sculptures, installation and photography. We very much enjoy this freedom of using a variety of ideas and materials to bring our concept across.

 There are some drawings on your site too. Tell us something about them.

 Drawing is something I have done since a very young age and it is still a moment of total freedom to me. I like to see these works as a necessary space of fantasy where I can let go of the conceptual and technical considerations. Most of time the sculptures will come from the drawings, but it also happens that I draw from work we previously did in order to step back and reflect from what was previously done.

I was struck with your “Air Spray”. How did you create that bubble effect?

 The air pumped into the sculpture comes from Mathieu’s air tank that he uses while diving. The air pressure is regulated and let into a hose, which goes into the metal structure. That is when the shower’s head activate and rise in the water.

 Which is the role of photomanipulation in your art?

 We use the raw format to shoot, which enable us to correct the white balance or exposure when the visibility underwater wasn’t crystal clear. Occasionally when we decide the image needs it, we remove some backscatter. However the sculptures are what they are and we do not alter the image on that level.

 You wrote that “objects seems to metamorphose and become organic creatures”. In fact “Blueberry Shake” has nothing to do with blueberries or something eatable but with a new generation of creatures: plastic glasses brought to life. Why?

 Blueberry Shake is made from an accumulation of plastic to-go cups surrounding LED lights. It is a representation of the left overs surrounding the typical natural healthy fruit shake. When we make the work it looks just like a pile of garbage but when submerged the structure underwater appears in a snake like shape. This is what we mean when we say the work seems to metamorphose in organic creatures. The shape of the work will be determined when placed underwater. This is when the sea becomes in control of the work and we are just capturing this moment with photography.

Is there no place left for humans in your art?

If you look at the current underwater imagery most of its artistic side reside in human representation like in fashion or even with the underwater sculpture park of Jason DeCaires. Our works aims to imagine what will be left of human activity rather then the people themselves. It is always so disturbing to think of the fact that a random plastic bag used for half a day will last more then 10 time longer than an average human life. To compare the time the object served its function to the time it takes to disintegrate is astounding. Humans are surrounded by an endless variety of mass produced objects. We are not doing this work from a particular political engagement; we are just trying to replace these objects in the context where they spend most of there existence.

 An interesting section of your site is “Making of”: why do you let other people see how you work?

 Our work is the outcome of an exchange and is not about personal introspection. Therefore we think our process and lifestyle is also a part of the work and we believe it is worth sharing. We are open to suggestions and collaborations so we don’t want our work to be obscure or unnecessarily mysterious. Furthermore, we enjoy seeing how other people’s work is made so why not do it ourselves.

 What are your goals as an artist?

 As an artist I guess we would like to participate to the idea that freedom is essential and that imagination is the heart of freedom. It might sound cheesy but we do believe that dreams are a necessary driving force.

Tell us something about your upcoming projects.

 We are making more works including lights and movements. Mathieu is building his own ROV (remote operated vehicle), and with this idea in mind we would like to make a series of autonomous sculptures with propellers that could be controlled by iPad to exhibit them in aquariums. We also would love to find an old shipwreck where we could build a large light and sound installation for divers. These are currently dreams but we hope that if we find the right venues and collaborators it could happen!

Forlane 6 è non solo il luogo dove tu e il tuo compagno Mathieu Goussin realizzate I vostri lavori, ma anche dove vivete: cos’è e perché avete fatto questa scelta?

Forlane 6 è il nome della nostra barca vecchia di 40 anni, su cui viviamo nel Mediterraneo. Al momento siamo ormeggiati a Creta per l’inverno. E’ stato dal nostro navigare insieme che è nata l’idea di lavorare sott’acqua. Per questo abbiamo chiamato il nostro atelier Forlane 6. Vivere su una barca per andare alla scoperta di posti dove lavorare sott’acqua è ideale, ci fornisce molte più possibilità. 

Cosa sono le “installazioni d’arte sommersa” e da dove avete preso l’idea?

L’idea è nata da una nostra conversazione su tutte le cose varie che avremmo visto in fondo al mare come buste di plastica, vecchi stivali o piatti. Abbiamo parlato di come questi oggetti sarebbero diventati e come sarebbero probabilmente diventati parte di questo ambiente sott’acqua. A un certo punto, abbiamo deciso di dar vita a questi pensieri. Il Mediterraneo è un mare molto limpido, con incredibili formazioni rocciose e molta poca vita marina, era un luogo perfetto per collocare queste creature immaginarie. 

Sul vostro sito avete scritto che il vostro lavoro è ispirato da Roman Signer e Susanna Majuri, da scultura e fotografia. Perché?

Dall’inizio dei miei studi, sono sempre stata ipnotizzata dal concetto di scultura in azione di Roman Signer. Credo che il suo lavoro possa parlare a chiunque su livelli molto diversi. Il nostro lavoro è inspirato dalle sue opere fugaci e l’uso di oggetti domestici attivato da elementi naturali come aria o acqua. Ci piace anche l’assurdità dei suoi pezzi, che portano sempre un tocco molto ironico. Il lavoro di Susanna Majuri è stato una scoperta più recente. Siamo interessati al fatto che metta in scena il suo lavoro per creare sul serio un mondo suo, usando la fotografia. 

In che modo usate media diversi?

Il nostro lavoro è un misto di sculture, installazioni e fotografia. Ci piace molto questa libertà di usare una gamma di idee e materiali per esprimere ciò che abbiamo dentro. 

Ci sono anche alcuni disegni sul vostro sito. Parlacene un po’.

Disegnare è qualcosa che ho fatto da quando ero molto giovane ed è ancora un momento di libertà totale per me. Mi piace vedere questi lavori come uno spazio necessario di fantasia, dove posso spogliarmi delle considerazioni concettuali e tecniche. Il più delle volte, le sculture derivano dai disegni, ma succede anche che tragga dei disegni da lavori che abbiamo fatto in precedenza, in modo da fare un passo indietro e riflettere rispetto ciò che è stato fatto prima. 

Sono rimasta colpita dal vostro “Air Spray”. Come avete creato quell’effetto con le bolle?

L’aria pompata nella scultura viene dalla bombola d’aria di Mathieu, che usa mentre fa immersioni. La pressione dell’aria è regolata e rilasciata dentro un tubo per annaffiare, che sfocia nella struttura di metallo. Così la pigna della doccia viene attivata e sgorga l’acqua. 

Qual è il ruolo della fotomanipolazione nella tua arte?

Scattiamo in formato raw, che ci consente di corregge il bilanciamento del bianco o l’esposizione quando la visibilità sott’acqua non era limpida e cristallina. A volte, quando decidiamo che l’immagine ne ha bisogno, rimuoviamo alcune radiazioni di ritorno. Comunque, le sculture sono ciò che sono e non alteriamo l’immagine da quel punto di vista. 

Hai scritto che “gli oggetti sembrano avere una metamorfosi e diventare creature organiche”. In effetti “Blueberry Shake” non ha nulla a che fare con I mirtilli o con qualcosa di commestibile, ma con una nuova generazione di creature: bicchieri di plastica che diventano vivi. Perché?

Blueberry Shake è fatto di una raccolta di tazze di plastica da asporto, circondate da luci LED. E’ una rappresentazione degli avanzi che circondano il classico, naturale e sano frappe di frutta. Quando facciamo il lavoro sembra giusto un cumulo di spazzatura, ma quando immergiamo la struttura sott’acqua, appare in una forma simile a quella di un serpente. Questo è ciò che intendiamo quando diciamo che il lavoro sembra trasformarsi in creature organiche. La forma del lavoro sarà definita quando sarà piazzato sott’acqua. Questo accade quando il mare prende il controllo del lavoro e noi stiamo semplicemente immortalando questo momento con la fotografia. 

Non è rimasto spazio per gli esseri umani nella vostra arte?

Se guardi all’attuale immaginario sott’acqua, la maggior parte del suo lato artistico consiste nella rappresentazione umana, come nella moda o persino con il parco di scultura acquatica di Jason DeCaires. Il nostro lavoro punta a immaginare cosa resterà dell’attività dell’uomo, piuttosto che le persone stesse. E’ sempre così allarmante pensare al fatto che una qualsiasi busta di plastica, usata per mezza giornata, durerà più che dieci volte tanto rispetto a una vita umana media. Fare un paragone tra il tempo che l’oggetto ha servito alla sua funzione e il tempo che ci vuole a degradarsi, lascia senza fiato. Gli esseri umani sono circondati da una varietà infinita di oggetti di produzione di massa. Non stiamo facendo questo lavoro per un particolare coinvolgimento politico: stiamo solo provando a rimpiazzare questi oggetti nel contesto in cui trascorrono la maggior parte della loro esistenza. 

Una sezione interessante del vostro sito è “Making of”:  perché lasciate che altre persone vedano come lavorate?

Il nostro lavoro è il risultato di uno scambio e non riguarda l’introspezione personale. Perciò pensiamo che il nostro processo e stile di vita sia anche una parte del lavoro e riteniamo che valga la pena condividerli. Siamo aperti ai consigli e alle collaborazioni, per cui non vogliamo che il nostro lavoro sia nascosto o misterioso senza motivo. Inoltre, ci piace vedere com’è fatto il lavoro degli altri, dunque perché non mostrare anche noi il nostro. 

Quali sono i vostri obiettivi come artisti?

Come artista, penso che ci piacerebbe partecipare all’idea che la libertà sia essenziale e che l’immaginazione sia il cuore della libertà. Potrebbe suonare banale, ma pensiamo che I sogni siano una forza trainante imprescindibile. Dicci qualcosa riguardo I vostri prossimi progetti. Stiamo facendo più lavori sulle luci e I movimenti. Mathieu sta costruendo il suo ROV (veicolo comandato a distanza), e con questa idea in mente ci piacerebbe realizzare una serie di sculture autonome con eliche che potrebbero essere controllate tramite iPad per esporle negli acquari. Ci piacerebbe anche trovare un vecchio relitto di nave, dove poter costruire una grande installazione di luci e suoni per subacquei. Al momento questi sono sogni, ma speriamo di trovare le giuste sedi e collaboratori per realizzarli! 

Come ti sei avvicinata alla pittura e cosa significa per te quest’arte?

La passione per il disegno ha sempre fatto un po’ parte di me, ma non avrei mai detto, consapevolmente, che avrei voluto diventare una pittrice. E’ qualcosa che è venuto da sé, in modo spontaneo e naturale. Anzi, avevo proprio scelto l’indirizzo del restauro per trovare uno sbocco lavorativo pratico alla mia inclinazione… ma a volte il destino fa strani scherzi. Infatti, non sono mai riuscita ad avere un posto fisso in quella professione, e mi sono trovata a dipingere. Ho iniziato a 19 anni, facendo alcune piccole marine ad acquarello, e da allora non ho più smesso. Ovviamente, ci sono voluti molti anni per arrivare a elaborare un linguaggio espressivo che si confacesse al mio modo di essere. Dipingere, come qualsiasi altra arte, è estremamente difficile, e richiede molta costanza e applicazione quotidiana. Un mio professore di pittura diceva sempre che dipingere è come suonare il pianoforte: se non ci si esercita con rigore, i risultati non arrivano. La pittura per me è importantissima, la considero un dono. Mi ha anche aiutato molto nella vita, per affrontare certi momenti molto brutti e difficili del passato. Dipingere e fare mostre mi fa sentire bene.

Chi sono i tuoi maestri ispiratori?

I pittori che mi hanno maggiormente influenzata sono quelli della Scuola Veneta, nello specifico Tintoretto e l’ultimo Tiziano. Il prevalere del colore sulla forma, tratto tipico della pittura veneta, è stato infatti il fondamento sul quale ho elaborato il mio linguaggio; la disgregazione della forma, in particolare, è un aspetto che si riscontra, in maniera innovativa per i tempi, nella pittura dell’ultimo Tiziano. Anche Rembrandt, per quanto riguarda gli effetti di luce, è stato importante, oltre alla pittura fiamminga seicentesca, in relazione alla scelta di soggetti quotidiani nella natura morta. L’influenza degli Impressionisti è innegabile, per ciò che concerne alcune scelte tecniche: la pennellata veloce, l’ombra colorata e la pittura en plein air. Infine, un artista che mi ha veramente influenzata, soprattutto di recente, è William Turner, del quale adoro la magica atmosfera pulviscolare che pervade i suoi paesaggi.

Quali sono le tecniche che utilizzi per i tuoi lavori? Preferisci le tecniche tradizionali o il digitale?

Le tecniche che utilizzo in pittura sono tendenzialmente tradizionali, come acrilico, tempera, olio; raramente dipingo su tela, preferendo, come supporti, il legno o il cartone. Anche l’acquarello è una tecnica molto espressiva, specie quando si tratta di rappresentare il mare. Ultimamente ho utilizzato spesso una tecnica mista costituita da acquarello, gessetto e carboncino, a volte anche con l’aggiunta del collage; la trovo molto adatta per illustrare storie. Il digitale è un universo espressivo affascinante, che offre delle grandi potenzialità, anche se penso che il calore del disegno a mano sia insostituibile. A questo proposito, mi interessa molto l’abbinamento di digitale e manuale, cioè la fusione delle emozioni suscitate dal disegno con le possibilità espressive di una tecnologia così potente; credo che questa commistione sia una strada da percorrere e che possa diventare un nuovo orizzonte per la rivalutazione delle arti figurative. Ho voluto sperimentare l’uso del digitale applicato al disegno tradizionale in un video di animazione, per il quale ho disegnato le immagini di base, per poi animarle servendomi di un programma di animazione in 2D. Ho anche sperimentato la commistione di digitale e manuale in un autoritratto, realizzato ad acquarello ed elaborato in seguito al computer.

Sei anche una restauratrice. Parlaci di quest’attività.

Ho lavorato nel campo del restauro per diversi anni, in particolare ho restaurato dipinti, affreschi e sculture di terracotta. Mi piaceva molto quel lavoro, anche se, purtroppo, non ho avuto delle esperienze molto positive a riguardo, e alla fine ho preso la decisione di lasciare quella professione. L’ambiente del restauro è molto duro, con ritmi di lavoro piuttosto intensi e mansioni fisicamente pesanti, soprattutto per una persona non robusta di costituzione, come me. Le condizioni di lavoro, inoltre, erano molto precarie; a volte capitava persino di lavorare senza contratto e le paghe erano decisamente basse. A ciò si aggiungeva la pericolosità del lavoro stesso, tra ponteggi ed esposizione a sostanze chimiche, nonché la frustrazione per la mancanza di soddisfazioni o riconoscimenti. Mi ricordo che, qualche volta, io e i miei colleghi non siamo stati nemmeno invitati alle inaugurazioni, mentre altri si prendevano il merito per lavori che non avevano svolto e per le capacità che non avevano. Per tutte queste ragioni, ho deciso di abbandonare il restauro, anche se non rimpiango niente di ciò che ho fatto: quelle esperienze mi hanno insegnato tantissimo relativamente alle tecniche pittoriche e, per alcuni lavori, mi è rimasta una grande soddisfazione. A volte, in cantiere, mi sono anche divertita molto coi miei colleghi.

Nei tuoi dipinti, lo spettatore si trova immerso in atmosfere invernali, in cui si alternano alberi imbiancati dalla neve a sentieri lastricati di ghiaccio. Sono “paesaggi immaginari”, mentre in altri lavori è facile per un bolognese riconoscere alcuni scorci della città. Hai ritratto anche Londra. Descrivici il perché.

Sin dalla prima volta che sono stata a Londra, questa città mi è entrata nel cuore; non so neanche come e perché, ma mi ha emozionato e colpito positivamente. E’ piena di vita e di gente da tutto il mondo; poi mi piace particolarmente quella presenza di colore rosso ovunque, tra le porte dipinte e il colore dei mattoni delle case. La trovo una città bellissima e molto in sintonia con la mia personalità. Per queste ragioni ci sono sempre voluta ritornare, e per questi stessi motivi l’ho ritratta più volte, affezionandomi sempre di più ad alcuni luoghi che mi sono diventati cari, come i mercati di Camden.

Cosa c’è nella tua mente mentre dipingi?

E’ difficile da spiegare a parole… ma ci provo. E’ come se nella mia mente ci fossero due parti, una emotiva e una pragmatica e razionale. Quando dipingo, è come se fossi animata da un sentimento, che non è altro che l’emozione che intendo trasmettere attraverso il colore e la scelta del soggetto; è questo sentimento che crea le atmosfere dei miei lavori. Questa era la parte emotiva. Per quanto riguarda quella pragmatica, questa corrisponde al rigore e alla concentrazione necessari per tradurre una cosa immateriale come un sentimento in un lavoro tecnicamente corretto, che mi soddisfi e che veramente riesca, dal mio punto di vista, a rendere visivamente quelle emozioni. Dipingendo, il livello di concentrazione è alto; infatti, quando ho finito un lavoro mi sento stanca. Quando dipingo ascolto sempre musica.

Nei tuoi lavori predominano i colori freddi, ma ogni tanto un tocco di rosso illumina tutto ed è come sentire qualcosa di vivo lottare per emergere da sotto una lastra di ghiaccio. Penso al cuore tatuato sul petto del marinaio, penso alla rosa sfiorita ma non del tutto appassita. In realtà, anche la coppia che si abbraccia o gli occhi del tuo autoritratto mi comunicano vita, volontà, voglia di lottare….questa la mia grossolana analisi da profana! Quali erano le tue vere intenzioni?

 Mi è piaciuta molto la tua analisi, penso che hai colto molto delle emozioni espresse nei miei lavori. Prima parlavo di un certo sentimento che anima i miei dipinti. Questo sentimento, anche se può variare a seconda dei momenti e dei periodi, ha un fondamento comune: è una sorta di malinconia e di tristezza, se vogliamo anche di un gelido distacco nel confronti della realtà che ci circonda; tutto ciò, però, non ha niente a che fare con la depressione o con pensieri negativi, anzi, è l’espressione di un forte desiderio di una realtà diversa, piena di bellezza. Sono stata molto contenta del fatto che i miei quadri ti abbiano comunicato vita e voglia di lottare; anche per me rappresentano qualcosa di vitale, un’espressione di forza e resistenza verso tutta la volgarità e la bruttezza che caratterizzano il nostro tempo. Forse tutto ciò può sembrare sciocco o infantile, ma sono i miei sentimenti. Nei miei quadri, comunque, sono rappresentati anche certi luoghi a cui sono molto affezionata, come la Montagnola di Bologna o la costa ligure; si possono trovare anche certi aspetti che riguardano la mia vita, anche se sono espressi in maniera molto nascosta.

Sappiamo che stai per costituire un’associazione culturale e artistica. Puoi dirci di cosa si tratta nello specifico e quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro?

L’associazione artistica che sto per costituire si chiama Luci e Ombre e ha sede in via Mascarella 12 a Bologna, in zona universitaria. Si tratta fondamentalmente di uno spazio espositivo che può essere utilizzato dagli artisti, quali pittori, fotografi, illustratori, ecc., per mostrare le loro opere. La partecipazione alle mostre è a pagamento, in quanto ci sono i costi dell’affitto e di altre spese mensili da sostenere; i prezzi, comunque, sono modici rispetto agli standard bolognesi. Quando non ci saranno mostre di altri artisti, nella sala si potranno vedere esposti i miei lavori. Lo spazio espositivo è aperto tutti i giorni tranne la domenica e io sarò là, a presenziare le mostre e a dipingere; lo spazio fungerà anche come studio di pittura. Le mostre, sia personali sia collettive, non sono l’unica attività dell’associazione: si svolgeranno anche dei corsi, tenuti da me, di disegno e pittura, e la sala potrà essere data nelle ore serali ad altre associazioni, qualora fossero interessate, per svolgere attività artistiche e culturali. La sala è anche dotata di videoproiettore. Per quanto riguarda i miei progetti futuri, oltre a dipingere, fare mostre e vendere i miei quadri, mi piacerebbe dedicarmi a questa associazione, in modo che cresca e si sviluppi, sperando che possa diventare, nel centro cittadino, una sorta di piccolo punto di riferimento per gli artisti che abbiano voglia di esporre le proprie opere senza essere costretti a spendere troppo.

Sul tuo sito è possibile ammirare un bellissimo video, frutto del tuo lavoro di illustrazione e animazione della poesia “Crossing the Tropics” (contenuta nella raccolta “John Marr and Other Sailors) di Herman Melville, l’autore molto noto per il romanzo Moby Dick ma meno per le sue poesie. Come mai hai scelto di illustrare questi versi?

 Herman Melville è il mio scrittore preferito, infatti io ho sempre adorato la narrativa di viaggio, specie le storie di mare. Quando per la prima volta ho letto “John Marr and Other Sailors”, ne sono rimasta così colpita che ho deciso di voler illustrare quelle poesie. Mi identificavo in quei versi, sia nelle situazioni sia nei sentimenti dei personaggi. Poi, non so perché, ho abbandonato il progetto, che è rimasto irrealizzato per diversi anni, sino all’anno scorso, quando ho deciso di dargli vita. “John Marr and Other Sailors” è una raccolta incentrata sui ricordi di navigazione di un marinaio triste e solitario, John Marr, il quale, costretto a lasciare la navigazione per un infortunio e rimasto vedovo, trova conforto nel ricordo dei suoi vecchi compagni di mare. John, osservando la prateria sconfinata, associa quella immensità alla vastità dell’Oceano; insieme a questo pensiero evocativo, cominciano ad apparirgli, come fossero fantasmi, tutti i compagni di navigazione, che diventano così compagni spirituali con i quali “un cuore visionario desidera ardentemente ricongiungersi”. “Crossing the Tropics” è una poesia dalle atmosfere cosmiche, dove il ritmo è scandito dalla rotazione del globo e dall’incessante movimento delle onde. Sono versi di lontananza, molto tristi, attraverso i quali il marinaio protagonista evoca il ricordo della moglie che forse non rivedrà mai più; questa lontananza viene resa tramite la contrapposizione dei due emisferi, quello australe e quello boreale, e mediante l’immagine delle relative costellazioni. “John Marr and Other Sailors” ha qualcosa di magico per me; spero tanto di essere riuscita, attraverso il video e le illustrazioni, a rendere almeno un po’ di quella magia.

Ci sono altre opere letterarie che ti piacerebbe illustrare?

Sì, proprio adesso sto cominciando a lavorare a un nuovo progetto legato alla poesia. Si tratta della rappresentazione di una serie di poesie di mare di diversi autori, sia di lingua italiana sia di lingua inglese; questa volta, però, non utilizzerò la tecnica dell’illustrazione, come in “John Marr and Other Sailors”, ma quella della pittura su tavola. Il lavoro si intitolerà “La febbre del mare”, dalla bellissima poesia marinara di John Masefield, “Sea Fever”.

Cos’è che manca alla tua vita?

Un po’ di serenità e di stabilità economica…….e, se vogliamo, anche un pizzico di fortuna.

Hai qualche consiglio per un novellino che voglia avvicinarsi alla tua arte?

Il consiglio che posso dare è seguire sempre le proprie ispirazioni e i propri sentimenti più profondi, cercando di farsi influenzare il meno possibile dalle mode e dalle scuole di pensiero dominanti; qualsiasi linguaggio espressivo ha delle potenzialità, ciò che conta è il contenuto che si vuole comunicare e l’autenticità dei sentimenti espressi. E’ anche importante non dimenticarsi mai che fare arte equivale a rigore e costanza; è quindi necessario esercitarsi e impegnarsi a fondo per ottenere dei buoni risultati; se si tiene duro, prima o poi questi arriveranno.

Come ti sei avvicinato alla fotografia?

Mio padre me l’ha fatta scoprire, lui sviluppava e stampava in casa, mentre io vivo in un’epoca digitale e più comoda. Credo però che il mio breve passato analogico si possa vedere nelle mie scelte fotografiche. Un amico poi mi ha aperto altri orizzonti. L’evoluzione e l’involuzione in un fotografo sono fattori naturali, guardando i lavori nel tempo si possono notare molti cambiamenti ma anche molti punti fermi. Possono cambiare i gusti ma non la sensibilità. Un po’ come ascoltare la discografia di una band.

Ricordi quale è stato il tuo primo scatto? E quando? 

Da bambino scattavo con un paio di 6×6 di mio padre, mi affascinava guardare dall’alto e vedere il mondo al contrario. La prima foto digitale invece dev’essere stato sicuramente un autoscatto nudo.

Qual è la tua attrezzatura?

Prediligo visuali ampie e amo il risultato di focali 35mm, quindi ultimamente non la stacco più dal corpo. Inoltre ho sempre con me una vecchia analogica p&s 35mm e una bottiglia di vino rosso.

Qual è l’artista  che maggiormente influenza i tuoi lavori?

Tra i fotografi, Juergen Teller non mi stufa mai

Quante e quali sono i fattori che influenzano il tuo modo di scattare?

Due fattori: la quotidianità influenza sempre il mio modo di scattare, nel senso che propone nuove idee e impulsi. Non sono uno da studio e noiose pose standard, quelle le lascio ai ceramisti. Quindi mi sono fondamentali l’atmosfera che si crea con chi ho davanti e l’umore della giornata. Inoltre conoscere e collaborare con fotografi di vari settori (reportage, moda, eventi…) mi ha dato modo di rubare dei piccoli dettagli e modellarli nella mia testa per arricchire la mia tecnica.

Nella maggior parte delle tue fotografie sono ritratte delle donne, come scegli i tuoi soggetti?

Fotografare donne è più facile: sono suggestive, sensuali, narcise. Recentemente sto ritraendo anche molti ragazzi, dopotutto sono narcisi anche loro. Generalmente non scelgo solo in base alla bellezza, mi interessa di più che chi ritraggo sia interessante, attivo, sexy.

Molti dei tuoi scatti sono all’interno di abitazioni, é una scelta precisa o legata a delle necessità? 

E’ una scelta precisa: mi piace l’idea di ritrarre le persone nel loro habitat e al tempo stesso rivoluzionarlo. Uno dei momenti più stuzzicanti è frugare nel loro guardaroba e scegliere abbinamenti a cui non avrebbero mai pensato. Un altro dei segni caratterizzanti dei tuoi scatti é la luce. Utilizzi spesso luce artificiale e fondale naturale o poco illuminato. Nella mia testa esistono due emisferi: luce naturale (le mie origini, che porto avanti tutt’ora in maniera minore o concerti e scatti privati) e flash dritto nudo e crudo. Trovo più drammatico e provocante il risultato di ombre e colori dati dal flash montato direttamente sulla mia camera. Inoltre ti liscia la pelle.

Come nasce un tuo scatto?

Se ne ho la possibilità incontro prima la persona e a seconda di cosa mi trasmette decido il mood degli scatti. Poi improvviso, mi muovo attorno al soggetto e sudo. 

Non parlo mai di nudo, ma mi piace la pelle e se c’è sintonia viene naturale. Voglio decidere io tutto, il risultato deve piacere prima a me e di conseguenza a chi ritraggo. Se poi trasmette qualcosa anche agli altri, meglio.

Se potessi scegliere una collaborazione con un grande artista, con chi ti piacerebbe realizzarla?

Prince.

Se dovessi scegliere una definizione per i tuoi lavori, come ti piacerebbe venissero definiti?

Stimolanti.

Progetti per il futuro?

Conoscere gente, fare in modo che si piaccia fotografandola. Dopo diversi mesi passati in Indonesia ora mi metterò nuovamente in viaggio sperimentando due culture nuove per me e molto diverse tra loro.

I walked into a local Stinker (yes real name) gas station and convenience store. Upon taking my purchases to the counter the young clerk remarked, “Dude, your head is perfectly round.” Pause, my reply: “Uh, thank you?” One would think that in such a perfectly round dome ideas and images might be orbiting neatly, ripe for the plucking. Nothing could be further from the truth. If my head were opened it would be quite messy. A lot goes in there and if I did not let it out, occasionally an eye would pop. Though my work can be meticulous in its execution my mind scribbles, jumps, spins, and spits. There is rarely more than an itch when I begin. Surface will speak to me and stuff emerges as unknown yet familiar characters, odd forms, and unbalancing juxtapositions. Some pieces divulge narratives as I paint, some stare back and challenge. Hopefully those who look at my work will be touched in that mad place that lies in the corner of all brains.

-When did you start “doodling”?

I never stopped like most people. So as early as I could hold something in my hand.

Anyone who has worked long and hard enough develops a voice. I try not put too much effort into defining my voice or there’s a danger of affectation. Chasing “style” is dangerous so I’ll let others define my work.

If I tell you a story it might not be the same story you see. That would be bad. I have stories about making work. Dogs chewing up drawings, snakes crawling through oil palettes and then across drawings, cats walking on paintings that were still wet but you don’t want to hear those.

No desk. The table I work at is one provided me by one of my first employers out of college. Well built and I still like it.

The important question for me is not what I’m communicating but that I am communicating or having an effect. To make someone look. To engage someone.

If there weren’t challenges during the process of creating a picture it wouldn’t be worth doing. It sounds cliche, but a difficult process often leads to a satisfying conclusion. I guess the greatest challenge is always time. There comes a point in a painting where new ideas start coming for the next painting. Staying on task can be a great challenge when the next great piece is waiting to be started.

Hell or Heaven, they’re interchangeable.

“The Lyre of Orpheus” Last book in the Cornish Trilogy by Robertson Davies. I am currently reading “Straight Man” by Richard Russo. I read it once a year right before the Fall semester starts. I also read images every day. Illustration annuals, art magazines, etc.

Now you’ve done it. Favourite is an absolute. I’m not fond of them. Favourite, perfect, best, etc.. Too many variables in life. Things need to be contextualized. Favourite color of what, on which day, adjacent to what, and so on. There are artists who have inspired me from Bosch and Van Eyck up to and including Dave McKean, Ian Miller, and Phil Hale. But to choose a favourite would be like asking do you prefer your heart or lungs.

Probably granola and yogurt. Not because I’m a health nut but I can’t think of anything else.

 

Why are you bald? My brain has grown large enough to force out all of the hair.

The Indignados

-As we currently find ourselves in the midst of a global economic and social tail spin, I’d like to focus on a group of people that have adopted the name, The Spanish Indignados.   Like the Occupy Wall Street movement (OWS), the Indignados were brought together in order to bring awareness to social oppression, economic inequality, corporate greed, government corruption and the influence that global corporations have had on their governments.  They are a group of men and women that do not belong to any left or right wing parties, they are, as the OWS coined, the 99%.  They are the underdogs, the shrinking middle-class workers voicing their opinions louder and louder as Spain continues to dive deeper into economic woe.  Indigando is a term that properly defines the feeling of a large majority of Spanish citizens that are faced with an ever growing unemployment rate.  They are insulted by the choices their government has made.  Fed up with cutbacks and austerity measures that seem to only affect the middle to lower class citizens.  And tired that their voices continue to go unheard.

While photographing within the immense crowds during a number of protests over the last year, I’ve spoken with people that have lost their businesses, homes and their faith in a government that was supposed to be representing their best interests.   These people, both young and old, are protesting for social and economic equality.  They are protesting for basic rights that are being taken away in order to save a crumbling economy.  Being a photojournalist, trained to see both sides of a situation, I can understand that cutbacks are essential within an economic crisis.  However, when these cuts are blatantly affecting a majority of the lower class populace, its people can do nothing else but come together in opposition against their governments.

Spain is not alone in its hardships, and neither is Europe.  The worlds economic giants currently find themselves in a power tug-of-war with the general public.  We have seen what this 99%  is truly capable of in semi-recent revolutions in Tunisia and Libya, toppling governments that have long held on to their oppressive power.  In turn, the passion and dedication of these people have sparked the growing flame of the Indignados.

These photographs are meant to not only show one small piece of this global movement.  They are meant to express and reveal the communal voice of a group of people, as they come together to encourage hope and assurance in a world that currently finds itself in dismal economic and social times.

Joey Panetta was born just outside of Toronto, Canada. Photography has always been a large part of Joey’s life. Ever since he was a child all he ever really wanted to do was travel this world and capture the moments that make life worth living, good or bad; moments that would hopefully one day inspire others to do the same. His passion for what he does brings photography far beyond just a career choice, it is his way of life. He obsessively seeks to reveal the beauty in every situation, to encourage a dialogue with each image he produces and to also break the ‘comfortable bubble’ that many people tend to live within. His work not only defines who he is as a Photographer, but who he is as a person. Joey is currently based in Madrid, Spain.

In 2010 he published Beyond Vanity-Jenseits von Eitelkeit, a photographic book. As Ruedi wrote on his site, “The main objective has been to capture a real possible emotion.
Usually, photographers deal with surfaces, but it has become more and more important to go beyond that.” In order to achieve that, Ruedi does not force his models and let them free to express themselves in front of his camera. He focuses on the moment rather than on concepts and themes: he prefers seizing the day and capturing the soul of his models.

Ruedi Beckmann thinks photography should not only focuses attention on something superficial, it should be something deeper. For this reason he observed a group of women between 16 and 25 (some older) during years. His aim was to portray 12 years of human life, not only his models’ but also autobiographically. In fact Ruedi realized an important book (268 pages) whose goal is not to be just a “coffee table book” but a tool to taking some time to think about its concept: exploring “everyone’s very own personal beauty”.

“I like the idea that a picture only shows a single moment of a person’s life”, Ruedi writes on page 10 of his book. He wrote also his diploma thesis about “internal and external view”: he is very interested in capturing a single moment in a person’s life through his camera, being aware of the uninterrupted development of human personality. Moreover that frozen moment allows to tear down our own walls of prejudice, achieving a new self-understanding by analizing the photograph: usually women who were asked by Ruedi to be portrayed answered they were not such a beauty and not at all photogenic.

People instead should go beyond that, reaching a different layer. For Beckmann it is interesting to see how much cleverer and stronger people feel after a period of crisis: this involves also a transformation of their self-image. Going deeper, people are able to find differences between what education forced them to do and what they really think: “Fears and complexes vanish, and you evolve to be an equal partner with respect and love for your match.”

Often this new self-image brings people to feel lost for a while. They are not accustomed to deal with this new form of ego, so they trick their vanity or they are blocked up. But in the end everyone a natural curiosity to find out more about her/himself. For this reason during every session Ruedi coped with approximation and distance but he finds interesting what he learned about himself and others: “people stick to the first obstacle of allowing your own beauty for such a long time. It reminds me a little of being new at school: you know absolutely nothing and are terrified that someone might realize that. After a while you acknowledge this problem you are having with yourself, you start to think ahead and finally manage to liberate yourself from this problem.“

Ma alla fine ognuno ha una curiosità naturale verso la scoperta ulteriore di se stessa/o. Per questo motivo, durante ogni sessione Ruedi ha avuto a che fare con approssimazione e lontananza, ma trova interessante ciò che ha imparato riguardo se stesso e gli altri: “le persone si fermano al loro primo ostacolo per molto tempo, prima di lasciar fuoriuscire la loro vera bellezza. Mi ricorda un po’ di quando si è nuovi a scuola: non sai assolutamente nulla e sei terrorizzato che qualcuno possa accorgersene. Dopo un po’, ti rendi conto di questo problema che hai con te stesso, inizi a pensare in prospettiva e alla fine riesci a liberartene”.

His current projects include 100 Abandoned Houses, focusing on abandoned houses in Detroit, Michigan, and Detroit’s Small Churches, a series on the adaptive reuse of small structures as small churches. Other photographic topics include industrial Detroit, and Detroit night scenes. Much of his work has focused on his former hometown of Detroit. His interest in Detroit developed early as a basic curiosity of the economic on social hardships the city has faced for decades. In an attempt to understand the state of the city, he has continued to photograph the area as its economic decline has accelerated.

 The abandoned houses project began innocently enough a little over ten years ago. I actually began photographing abandonment in Detroit in the mid 90’s as a creative outlet, and as a way of satisfying my curiosity with the state of my home town. I had always found it to be amazing, depressing, and perplexing that a once great city could find itself in such great distress, all the while surrounded by such affluence.

Brush Park, on the outskirts of Detroit’s entertainment district had always been an area of interest to me. For as long as I can remember, the area, filled with large houses and mansions, sat largely abandoned just a stones throw away from the Fox Theater, and not far from Wayne State University, the Masonic Theater, and even the central business district. How could an area that was, obviously, once a wealthy enclave in the city become an example of the downfall of American cities?

For years the area had signs advertising the redevelopment that was about to take place. Around 2000 it finally began to happen with the construction of the new ballpark for the Tigers, and Ford Field for the Lions. New condos and town homes began to appear amidst the rubble of burned out mansions turned apartments. Some of the houses were so large they became “loft condos”.

As the entertainment district flourished, and Brush Park began to transform into something new, I realized the other approximately 135 square miles of Detroit was largely ignored. The excitement about Detroit’s “rebirth” took center stage, while much of the rest of the city was becoming largely abandoned. Even Brush Park itself was still largely abandoned, but with the remaining tenants of Brush Park buildings being pushed out, and many of the old houses torn down, I moved on to other areas, where Detroiters were attempting to make a life among abandoned and burned out houses.

Often times, the neighborhoods were almost completely abandoned. In those neighborhoods I encountered concerned citizens, packs of wild dogs, 20 foot high piles of toilets, and houses with the facades torn off, filled with garbage.

Often times only one or two houses remain in entire neighborhood blocks. In other areas all of the houses are abandoned, and some of the blocks now resemble prairies more than the neighborhoods they once were.

It is sadly ironic, that a city with such poverty, and a major homeless problem would have so many abandoned houses. It would seem that cheap empty homes could house the poor and  homeless, but the situation is difficult. Some of the houses are foreclosed on by the banks that own the mortgages, while others are abandoned after crime, vandalism, and arson drive the occupants out. 

When the owners decide to get out, selling is often not an option. The houses are often run down and surrounded by others in even worse shape. The houses are often worth less than the amount owed on them, and even if they aren’t, it’s possible nobody will buy them. 

Fixing up houses, and giving them to needy families seems like an obvious solution, but many areas are dangerous, have no grocery stores, and are not patrolled by police. Furthermore maintaining a house in Detroit is not cheap. It’s hot and humid in the summer, and very cold, and often wet, in the winter. Houses, if not maintained, will decay fairly quickly.

Some of the more recently abandoned houses were, in fact, Habitat for Humanity types of low income housing. While the idea of housing the poor and homeless in cheap houses is appealing, it is much more difficult in practice.

Early on, as the number of images grew, and a documentary style emerged, I switched from mostly black and white, to color, and decided to name the series 100 Abandoned Houses. At the time, 100 seemed like a lot, although the number of abandoned houses in Detroit is more like 12,000. Encompassing an area of over 138 square miles, Detroit has enough room to hold the land mass of San Francisco, Boston, and Manhattan Island, yet the population has fallen from close to 2 million citizens, to just over 700,000. With such a dramatic decline, the abandoned house problem is not likely to go away any time soon.

Alcune case sono state pignorate dalle banche che detenevano le ipoteche, mentre altre sono state abbandonate dopo crimine, vandalismo, e incendio doloso che hanno buttato fuori gli occupanti. Quando i proprietari decidono di andarsene, spesso vendere non è una scelta contemplabile. Le case di solito sono svalutate e circondate da altre ridotte in condizioni se possibile peggiori. Le case spesso sono stimate meno di quel che è stato pagato per acquistarle, e anche se non lo sono, è facile che nessuno voglia comprarle. Sistemare le abitazioni e darle a famiglie bisognose sembra una soluzione scontata, ma molte zone sono pericolose, non hanno negozi di alimentari, e non sono sorvegliate dalla polizia. Inoltre, mantenere una casa a Detroit non è economico. Fa caldo ed è umido in estate, e molto freddo, spesso piovoso, in inverno. Le case, se non sottoposte a una continua manutenzione, si rovinano molto rapidamente. Alcune delle più recentemente abbandonate case erano, in effetti, l’habitat per tipi umani dalle poche entrate. Mentre l’idea di ospitare i poveri e i senzatetto è interessante, nella pratica essa è molto più complicata da realizzare.

Agli inizi, mentre la quantità di immagini cresceva, e veniva fuori uno stile documentaristico, sono passato da foto per lo più in bianco e nero al colore, e ho deciso di chiamare la serie 100 Abandoned Houses. All’epoca, 100 sembravano un sacco, sebbene il numero delle case abbandonate a Detroit sia di circa 12000. Abbracciando una zona di circa 222 km, Detroit ha abbastanza spazio per contenere la popolazione di San Francisco, Boston e dell’isola di Manhattan, nonostante la popolazione sia decresciuta da circa 2 milioni di abitanti a poco sopra i 700000. Con un declino così drammatico, il problema delle case abbandonate non sembra destinato a trovare una soluzione molto presto.

If you want to read the books of Ben Aaronovitch, it’s better if you buy all of them because when you finish one, you will have to read the next one.
Rivers of London takes you in a little bit different version of our world: there’s magic. Nothing so strange, just something some people can do and find in the world. Ben Aaronovitch jokes about…well about everything, but in a good way. He compares this magic to Harry Potter (of course); he makes jokes about the police (oh yeah, the main character is a policemen and it’s great  to see how magic compares with that: not so good). Reading about Ben Aaronovitch’s magic feels like you’re reading something normal. It makes sense. Rivers of London is the first book in the series and you can find out about magic with the constable.

Moon over Soho

In the  second book, Moon Over Soho, you will get to know more of that world together with a bit of London jazz scene. The main story goes on with new mystery even if you can solve a murder, maybe you can’t solve the bigger mystery. Maybe it’s that that makes great this series.
In fact, I can’t really explain to you any single book alone, you have to read all of them (you will want to read all of them).

Whispers Underground

In the third one, Whispers Underground, Ben Aaronovitch takes you underground (you woudn’t say eh?). New characters, same old story: great books, the discovery goes on in the end you will want to read the next one, but you won’t, we have to wait.
When I finished Whispers Underground I didn’t notice it, it’s like the story goes on a pause, it will go on just in another book.
When this book starts, the constable and we had found out about all of this just some months ago, all the events happen in a bunch of days and I don’t know why but I like that.
So, if you like mysteries this series suits you. If you like to read good stories that move smoothly this is perfect.

A note: Ben Aaronovitch wrote some episodes of Doctor Who, to me it was crucial to start to read his books.

Ciao Beatrice! Come ti sei avvicinata al mondo dell’illustrazione?

Non è stata una decisione immediata, anzi. All’inizio il mio sogno era fare fumetti, per questo mi sono iscritta all’Accademia. Poi pian piano ho scoperto anche la sceneggiatura, ma il mio ultimo amore si è rivelata l’illustrazione, soprattutto pensata per i bambini. Sarà forse quella sensazione che solo un’illustrazione sa dare, quella storia raccontata in un istante, che mi ha attirata.

Chi sono i tuoi maestri? Ti ispiri a qualcuno in particolare?

Se parliamo di maestri a livello teorico bisogna per forza citare Giorgio Cavazzano (mio idolo di sempre) e Barbucci e Canepa, spettacolare accoppiata di Sky-doll. Da loro ho imparato le basi, copiando all’infinito i loro lavori. Poi anche Bobby Chiu e Kei Acedera, della Imaginism. Più in grande, posso dire di ispirarmi ai lavori dell’Ankama, uno studio francese pieno zeppo di artisti di enorme valore, per cui sogno un giorno di lavorare. Il web è comunque pieno di artisti che scopro ad ogni passo e da cui cerco di imparare.

Che tecniche adoperi nei tuoi lavori? Prediligi gli strumenti tradizionali o il digitale?

Al tempo dell’accademia prediligevo soprattutto le tecniche tradizionali, poi però mi sono spostata sul digitale, anche seguendo i consigli di editori e artisti che hanno visto i miei lavori negli anni. Amo le linee pulite e precise, che risaltano con la colorazione digitale, specialmente con luci e ombre nette.

Hai partecipato al contest della Children Book Fair di Bologna: il tuo sogno è lavorare come illustratrice per bambini?

Sì, attualmente una delle mie aspirazioni maggiori è riuscire a emergere in questo ambiente, per quanto risulti complicato. Come ho detto, non è il mio unico obiettivo, ma è sicuramente quello più forte. Quella dell’illustrazione per bambini è poi una scelta “dovuta”, per così dire. Anche se in principio una mia idea può nascere come qualcosa di “serioso”, mano a mano che disegno, il tutto si trasforma. Mi dicono sempre che sono capace di trovare il lato “carino e coccoloso” di qualsiasi cosa.

Come cambia l’approccio al disegno quando si disegna per un bambino o si disegna per un adulto?

L’editoria per i più piccoli è un mondo variopinto e colorato (ed è uno dei motivi per cui mi piace così tanto). Le emozioni espresse devono essere chiare, specialmente se si parla di illustrazione. Tutto deve essere pensato per gli occhi di un bambino, occhi che vanno stupiti ed affascinati. Bisogna, credo, immedesimarsi nei bambini, capire il loro mondo e trovare un modo per metterlo sul foglio senza che il nostro “essere adulti” influenzi il risultato. E’ un po’ come dover tornare bambini, ma con le capacità grafiche di un adulto.

Cosa significa per te disegnare?

Tutto! Davvero, è come se potessi tirar fuori pezzi di me senza per questo sentirmi più povera. Inoltre ho scoperto negli anni che disegnare è un modo splendido per me per liberare la mente. Quando disegno i problemi spariscono e posso concentrarmi solo su quello che sto facendo. Resta il fatto che sono molto critica verso i miei lavori, quindi riuscire a fare un’illustrazione di cui sono felice è una soddisfazione personale unica.

Se non fossi un’illustratrice, saresti…

Una concept artist? Se invece parliamo del mondo al di fuori dell’arte, forse avrei scelto veterinaria per davvero. Anche se le lingue straniere “strane”, come l’arabo e il cinese, mi hanno sempre affascinata.

Trai ispirazione dalla realtà per i tuoi lavori?

Credo sia impossibile non essere influenzati dalla realtà, se si disegna. Per i miei animali spesso uso foto come reference, per farli sembrare più plausibili. Inoltre, appena ho un minuto libero esco per strada a disegnare le persone (e stando a Firenze devo dire che gli spunti di ogni nazionalità non mancano). La realtà spesso può essere più curiosa e bizzarra della fantasia di chiunque!

Biglietti d’auguri, magliette, fumetti… quale è in verità la superficie che vorresti assolutamente ricoprire con un tuo lavoro?

Quello in cui vorrei lavorare completamente è il mondo dell’illustrazione. Il settore “illustrazione” per fortuna non si limita ai libri. Mi diverto a cambiare, ogni tanto, e realizzare cose diverse come t-shirt, biglietti d’auguri e vetrine di negozi mi aiuta a non perdere quel brio che deve sempre essere presente quando si illustra. Capita a volte che, concentrandosi troppo su un solo punto, si rischi di entrare in un loop creativo-distruttivo. Inserendo progetti diversi nel corso dell’anno, posso distogliere per un attimo l’attenzione ed evitare anche solo di avvicinarmi a quel loop.

La tua volpe mi ha fatto venire in mente il Piccolo Principe, forse un’associazione un po’ scontata. Ti ci rivedi in quella storia?

Per quanto mi piacerebbe ricollegarmi al capolavoro letterario che è il Piccolo Principe, non credo sia il caso. Certo, potrei definirmi come una bambina alla scoperta di nuovi mondi, ma il mio ruolo potrebbe essere forse più quello del narratore. I protagonisti rimangono sempre i bambini, perché sono loro che in realtà viaggiano per mondi sconosciuti e incontrano volpi, vivendo mille avventure, proprio nel momento in cui “entrano” nelle immagini di un libro.

Che aiuto fornisce internet a un illustratore? Cosa cambia?

Cambia tutto. Internet ti permette di essere visibile in paesi in cui altrimenti non avresti la possibilità di farti notare (vedi solo questa intervista!). Inoltre grazie al web puoi conoscere quello che si vende in questo momento, qual è la situazione nel mondo editoriale e conoscere il lavori di artisti bravissimi, per ammirare o, ancora meglio, imparare da loro. Credo che internet abbia modificato del tutto il modo di fare arte: ora puoi sapere che genere di lavori proporre a una casa editrice, anche se non hai mai visto i loro libri dal vivo perché qui da noi magari non vengono pubblicati. Le frontiere lavorative si sono fatte ormai molto sottili. Certo, è anche più complicato farsi notare, ma questo lo si sa…

Beatrice Bencivenni was born and raised in the province of Bologna, she always had the mania for drawing and animals. She believed she wanted to be a veterinarian, until a latin teacher changed her mind. She graduated at Academy of Arts in Bologna, attending a course in Comic and Illustration with 110 cum laude. Now she’s attending Nemo NT, Academy of Digital Arts, at second year of E-Design. She hopes one day to illustrate children books and also to explore other sectors, like concept art and graphic novels.

Hi Beatrice! How did you get to the world of illustration?

It hasn’t been a sudden decision, indeed. In the beginning my dream was to make comics, that’s why I attended the Academy. Then I also found out screenplaying, but my latest love turned out to be the illustration, especially the one for the children. Maybe it was the sensation that only an illustration can give, the story told in a moment, that attracted me.

Who are your teachers? Is there anyone in particular who influenced you?

If we’re talking about theoric teachers I have to say without any doubts Giorgio Cavazzano (he’s always been my idol) and Barbucci and Canepa, the spectacular couple of Sky-doll. Then also Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera, of Imaginism. If we’re talking bigger, I can say I inspire to Ankama’s works, a french studio full of great artists, for which one day I dream to work. Anyway the web is full of artists I find  at every step and from whom I try to learn.

What techniques do you use in your works? Do you prefer the traditional tools or the digital ones?

During the Academy time I preferred traditional techniques, then I moved to digital, following the advices of editors and artists who have looked to my works during the years. I love the clean and precise lines, that stand out with the digital colouring, especially with sharp lights and shadows.

You took part in the Children Book Fair contest of Bologna: is it your dream to work as a children illustrator?

Yes, right now one of my greatest ambitions is to be able to emerge in this field, as difficult as it can be. As I said, this isn’t my only ambition, but it certainly is the strongest. Moreover, the children illustration is a “owed” choice, if we can say that. Even though in the beginning an idea can be born as something “serious”, the more I draw changes it completely. They always say to me that I can find the “cute and snuggly” side of everything.

How does the approach to the drawing differs when you are drawing for kids instead of adults?

The publishing for children is a multi-coloured world (and this is one of the aspect why I like that so much). The emotions expressed must be clear, especially if we talk about illustration. You have to think everything for the eyes of kids, which have to be amazed and enchanted. You have, I beleive, to identify yourself with kids, you have to understand their world and find a way to put it on paper without our “being adults” influencing the result. It’s a bit like becoming a kid again, but with adult graphic abilities.

What does drawing mean to you?

Everything! Really, it is like I can take out pieces of myself without making me feel poorer. I also found out during the last few years that drawing is a great way for me to clean my mind. When I’m drawing all the troubles go away and I can concentrate just on what I’m doing. Remains the fact I’m much critic to my works, so being able to make an illustration that I’m happy with is a unique satisfaction.

If you weren’t an illustrator, you would be…

A concept artist? If we are otherwise talking about the world outside the art, maybe I would have chose veterinary. Also the foreign “strange” languages, as Arab or Chinese, have always attracted me.

Do you take inspiration from reality for your works?

I think it’s impossible not be affected from reality, if you are drawing. For my animals I frequently use pictures as reference, to look like more life-like. Also, as soon as I have a free minute I go down in the street to draw people (and living in Florence I have to say that I don’t run out of ideas for people from every country). Often the reality can be more curious and bizarre of anyone’s fantasy.

Happy Birthday cards, t-shirts, comics… which one is the surface you absolutely want to cover with one of your works?

The one I would really want to work with is the illustration world. Luckily the “illustration” area doesn’t finish with the books. I enjoy to change, sometimes, and making different things like t-shirts, happy birthday cards and shop windows helps me to not lose that joy that has always to be there when you’re drawing. It happens sometimes, when you concentrate too much on one point, you risk to get in a creative-destructive loop. Having different projects during the year, I can divert the attention for one moment and avoid to even get near that loop.

Your fox made me think about the Little Prince, maybe a too easy connection. Do you see yourself in that story?

As long as I’d like to be connected to the literary masterpiece that the Little Prince is, I don’t think that’s the case. Of course, I can define myself as a little girl looking for new worlds, but my role could more easily be the one of the storyteller. The main characters are always the kids, because it’s them who actually travel to unknown worlds and meet foxes, living so many adventures, exactly like when they “get in” the illustrations of my book.

What kind of help does internet give to an illustrator? What does it change?

It changes everything. Internet allows you to be visible in countries in which otherwise you wouldn’t have the chance to be noticed ( just like this interview!). In fact with the web you can know what is selling at this moment, what is the situation in the publishing world and you can find works of great artists, to admire or, better, to learn from. I think the internet has changed entirely the way to do art: now you can know what kind of works offer to an editor, even if you hadn’t seen their books for real, maybe because they aren’t published in our country. The work frontiers by now are much lighter. Of course, it also is much more complicated be notice, but we know this…

What is the question you are not willing to answer even under torture?

Ehehehe, this one, I suppose

Dato che in Italia la gente sembra non capire, spesso si cambiano i titoli e che siano libri o film questo non importa. In questo caso la ISBN Edizioni ha fatto un lavoro ancora migliore: Player One di Douglas Coupland è uscito con il titolo Le ultime cinque ore e il libro di Ernest Cline che in originale si intitola Ready Player One è diventato solamente Player One, capisco che ci possa essere della confusione, ma a me queste cose sembrano sempre un po’ eccessive e in verità più macchinose della realtà. Fatta questa piccola premessa, sottolineo che io parlo di Player One aka Le ultime cinque ore di Douglas Coupland.

Come molto spesso succede con Douglas Coupland siamo in uno scenario estremo, postapocalittico. In questo caso la fine del mondo come noi lo conosciamo ora è dovuta all’aumento esorbitante del prezzo del petrolio. Così tanto da far fermare il mondo, le auto, i voli e da far causare qualche morte.
Ancora una volta come protagonista c’è un piccolo gruppo di persone che si ritrovano nel bar di un albergo vicino all’aeroporto di Toronto. Come sempre in Coupland le loro vite si incrociano e si influenzano a vicenda. I cinque capitoli seguono tutti la stessa divisione, ossia sono raccontati da ciascuno dei personaggi secondo il proprio punto di vista. Abbiamo Karen, la madre divorziata che cerca di rifarsi una vita e si incontra con un uomo conosciuto su una chat a tema “cosa succederebbe se il prezzo del petrolio salisse”(guarda caso). C’è Rick, il barman del locale che crede in uno dei tantissimi falsi profeti americani mangiasoldi. Luke, il prete che ha appena rubato tutti i soldi della sua chiesa e adesso dice di aver perso la fede. Infine Rachel, una donna più simile a un robot per colpa della sua malattia. A fare da riassunto e da anticipatore a tutto ecco Player One, voce che sovrasta tutti. Inutile ripetere che in uno scenario del genere qualche morte ci deve essere e anche un colpo di scena finale. Però se certi libri come Generation X, Generation A e Girlfriend in a coma vi sono piaciuti, allora vi piacerà per forza anche Player One. Douglas Coupland non si smentisce, ma non riesce nemmeno ad oltrepassare il minimo che ci si aspetta dalla sua scrittura.

I can skip the introduction I had made for the italian review of this book, you just have to know that In Italy the translation of the titles of a book or a film is a great problem. They always choose the wrong one.
As usual with Douglas Coupland we are in an extreme, postapocalyptical scenario. In this case, the end of the world as we know it now is due to the excessive increase of the oil price, so much it managed to stop the world, the cars, the flights and to cause some death.
Once again the protagonist is a small group of people who find themselves in the hotel’s bar near the Toronto’s airport. As usual in Coupland’s, their lives cross and influence each other’s ones. The five chapters follow the same partition, as they are narrated by everyone of the characters from each point of view. We have Karen, the divorced mother trying to build a life again and she is here to meet a man met in a theme chat, “What could happen if the oil price increases” (oddly enough).
Then there is Rick, the bartender who believes in one of so many false american prophets good just to take your money. Luke, the priest who just took all the money from his church and now says he had lost his faith. Last there is Rachel, a woman more like a robot because of her disease.
To resume and to reveal in advance all the facts, we have Player One, a voice that overlooks everybody. It’s useless to say that in a similar scenario we have some death and a dramatic turn of events. But if you liked some books like Generation X, Generation A and Girlfriend in a coma, so you will like Player One too. Douglas Coupland doesn’t disappoint, but he can’t overcome the least we expect from his writing.
If you are one of those persons who take the book always with them and you don’t want to overload yourself of hundreds of pages and you are in search for a quick reading, then Player One is the book for you.
