Showcase: Aleksey Kondratyev
Aleksey Kondratyev is a young talented photographer born in Kyrgyzstan and currently living in Detroit (MI, USA). He started taking pictures when he was 14 and he has been “exploring the beauty of the medium” since then…
What is photography for you?
For me, photography is a way to visually explore and analyze places, ideas, concepts, etc. It’s also been an obsession lately.
Which aspects of your pictures make them stand out as yours, what is your signature?
I try to photograph with a minimalist aesthetic; I feel as though much of contemporary photography is cluttered with unnecessary visual noise, and I attempt to avoid that in my photos.
How do you set up your work?
I typically shoot with a tripod and medium format camera. I try to plan out my compositions to a certain extent with out having them look too set-up.
Tell us a story about one of the places you have photographed that made you want to take their picture.
The photo above was shot in a half-built downtown area in Michigan. The city began building a downtown to help boost the economy, however they (ironically) ran out of money midway through the project and now all of the partially-built office spaces and parking garages sit there–unused.
Tell us a story about one of your pictures? What is your favourite shot and why?
My favorite shot is probably the one above. I feel like it captures what I was going for with this series fairly well.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to face to get a great picture?
One of the biggest challenges I face in my photography is deciding which elements to include in my photos–being that they are all fairly minimal, I have to be careful with what to include and what to leave out. This takes time and a lot of compositional analysis.
What`s the message of your photos, what do you want to communicate or accomplish through your work?
It’s at times mixed–most of my photos deal with my surrounding environment. They explore the feelings of isolation that come from cultural differences. They comment on the ambiguity and lack of definition in the future of the Detroit suburban landscape.
What`s the question you wish I had asked? …and what is the answer?
Q: What are you planning on doing next?
A: I am currently planning on doing a series documenting post-soviet recovery in Eastern Europe.
